"Etty" Performance @ St. Francis in the Redwoods Church

On Wednesday, March 4, at 7 pm, St Francis in the Redwoods Church will host a performance of “Etty,” a one woman play adapted from the diaries of Etty Hillesum, and written and performed by Susan Stein.

Admission is a suggested donation of $10 for adults and $5 for students.

The church is located at the corner of Commercial and Main Streets in downtown Willits.

Etty Hillesum was a 27-year old Jewish diarist who lived in Amsterdam during World War II. Although Etty had the opportunity to go into hiding, she elected to remain an active witness and chronicle daily events unfolding before her, ultimately losing her life at Auschwitz.

Standing alone on a bare stage with only a chair and a suitcase, Etty speaks directly to the audience as she witnesses her world and confronts God with her ethical and moral questions. Crafted solely from Hillesum's writings, this unconventional theater experience brings the audience into Etty's thinking, as she wrestles to write the life she is living--her loves, her work, her wry sense of humor, her knowledge of self and the moment in history.

Etty's story is a struggle against despair. In refusing to see herself as a victim, even as the world closes in around her, Etty finds a freedom with herself and affirms what it means to be human. The audience joins the conversation that the play Etty has begun. Each performance is followed by an audience- generated discussion that effectively becomes the second act of the play.

One reviewer said, “Susan Stein is a playwright and performer of exceptional talent. Speaking in the voice of Etty Hillesum, she mesmerizes the audience with a monologue of enormous depth of thought, of love and hate, fear and hope, despair and resilience, wit and humor.”

For more information, see ettyplay.org or contact Betsy Bruneau, (707)459-3390 or (707)459-6410.

Note:  For those who can't come to "Etty" in Willits, it will be performed the next evening at 7 pm in Ukiah at the Methodist Church.

Willits Community Theatre Presents: Goitse Quintet From Limerick, Ireland

The contagiously energetic Irish quintet Goitse will perform at the Willits Community Theatre, 37 W. Van Lane on Thursday, March 5 at 7pm. Forged in the creative crucible of Limerick University's Irish World Academy of Music and Dance, Goitse (pronounced "gwitcha") has won critical acclaim as one of the most sought after bands amongst connoisseurs of Irish Traditional music. The band recently released its second album "Transformed". Having performed with notoriety across four continents, Goitse now stands at the forefront of the traditional Irish music scene. Goitse was recently awarded "Trad Group of the Year 2015" from Live Ireland!

Their distinctive sound lies in the quality of their own compositions interspersed with traditional tunes from Ireland and abroad, which make each performance entertaining and unique. Laying the foundations for the music are World and All-Ireland bodhrán champion Colm Phelan and Conal O'Kane, who is fast making a name for himself as one of the finest guitarists of his generation. The gripping rhythm section sets a breaktaking pace for the music while the sweet, charismatic voice of Áine McGeeney draws audiences into the music in a way very few quintets can achieve.

McGeeney's energetic style of fiddle playing is complimented hugely by multi-award-winning banjo and mandolin virtuoso James Harvey. His ability to transcend genres, combined with his unparalleled technical ability is a joy to behold. Bridging the gap between melody and accompaniment is the piano and piano accordionist, Tadhg Ó Meachair. The Dublin native is renowned for his unique approach to bass work and accompaniment, while also having picked up national awards for his melody playing. Get set for a performance of wonderful music and fast paced fun with Goitse.

Advance tickets are $15 and available in person at Mazahar, 38 S.

Main Street, Willits; online at www.brownpapertickets.com; and by phone 24/7 at 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also be available at the door until sold out.
