Now and Then Film Series Presents - Our Daily Bread

Now and Then Film Series Presents "Our Daily Bread." A Brookside School Farm Fundraiser at the Little Lake Grange, 291 School Street in Willits at 7pm.

In this classic 1934 film by King Vidor, two city-dwellers hit hard by the financial fist of The Depression. Driven by bravery (and sheer desperation) they flee to the country and, with the help of other workers, set up a farming community - a socialist mini-society. The newborn community suffers many hardships - including drought, temptation and the long arm of the law - but ultimately pull together for a Utopian finish.

The artful black & white film paints a compelling picture of the struggle and hardships faced by Americans during this troubled economic period. The film has some wonderful & entertaining moments. Its relevance has not faded-particularly in light of today's economic climate.

Cost Suggested Donation of $5-$100 helps the Brookside School Farm build soil and produce food for the school.

Organic popcorn and chocolate, refreshments for sale by the Grange.

WCT Auditions for "The Angel of Chatham Square"

The Willits Community Theatre will hold auditions for The Angel of Chatham Square, a nostalgic drama by Healdsburg playwright Audie Foote. Auditions will be held at the WCT Playhouse on Wednesday, August 20th at 7pm and Saturday, August 23 at 11am.

The call is for two women (30s to early 50s) and six men (30s to 70s). Set in the depths of New York’s Bowery right after World War II, The Angel of Chatham Square tells a simple and heartwarming love story. A young widowed mother must travel back home at night alone. While she waits at a lonely bus stop at Chatham Square, a notoriously dangerous part of town known by locals as “the graveyard”, she runs into a group of derelicts who take her under their “wings.” One in particular wins her heart, and the play tells the story of how their unusual friendship blossoms into a love affair that spans six decades.

The Angel of Chatham Square will rehearse from mid-September through early November and will run from November 6 through November 23. Director Christine Dill has participated in local theatre for over 25 years. She has acted, staged managed, and prop mistressed for both the Ukiah Players and for Mendocino College. In February 2013 she directed Same Time, Next Year for WCT. Scripts are available at the Willits Public Library or call the director at 462-4015.

Molly's Revenge @ Willits Community Theatre

mollys1

The energetic Celtic trio Molly's Revenge will play traditional Scottish and Irish music at the Willits Community Theatre, 37 W. Van Lane in downtown Willits on Saturday, August 23 at 8pm.

This dynamic, acoustic threesome is known for its unique and infectious performances. The three members, David Brewer, John Weed and Stuart Mason, combine classic bagpipes, whistle, and fiddle, with a backdrop of guitar, mandola, and bodhran to guarantee an enjoyable experience for all fans. Molly's Revenge has performed at many of the top folk festivals and performing arts events in the USA, and prestigious events in Scotland, Australia and China. Their arrangement of traditional Celtic jigs and reels offers a driving, hard-edged accent that always leaves audiences shouting for more.

In 2013, the band released its all-instrumental, full-length studio CD entitled Trio, recorded at a remote location in the redwoods of the Mendocino coast. The CD encompasses Scottish pipe sets, driving Irish reels, jigs, polkas, slides, and hornpipes, French Canadian fiddle runs, and even a set of American old-time tunes featuring Highland pipes. Trio represents a compelling collection of fierce and beautiful tunes recorded at a rare coastal retreat.

Advance tickets for the show are $15 and available in person at Mazahar, 38 S. Main St., Willits; online at brownpapertickets.com, or phone the WCT office at 707-459-0895 for credit card orders. Tickets are also available at the door.

The performance is sponsored by Celtic Heritage Destinations Travel Agency of Willits.

Ed Miller "Songs of Scotland" Performs @ Willits Community Theatre

edmiller1

Scottish folksinger Ed Miller will perform at Willits Community Theatre, 37 W. Van Lane in downtown Willits on Saturday, August 30 at 8pm.

Miller has been hailed as one of the finest singers to come out of the recent Scottish folksong revival and one of Scotland's best singing exports. Originally from Edinburgh, he has been based in Austin, Texas for many years while playing at concerts, clubs, house events, festivals, Highland Games and Burns Suppers.
